Use Ctrl+ to select the various QIF files during
File->Import->RecoverAccounts.
If you want to do the QIF export/import, I would follow the steps
in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/178830 except in the first step
4, I would suggest this: start the name of the QIF file for the
investment accounts with an underscore (_), and start the name of
QIF files for the cash accounts associated with the investments
with a letter. Thus you might have _BrownInvestment.qif and
BrownInvestmentCash.qif. This would cause the investment account
to be processed prior to the associated cash account. When the
BrownInvestment got created, you would specify that you want to
track the cash transactions. Then specify that the cash
transactions account for BrownInvestment was where the
BrownInvestmentCash.qif transactions get sent.
Then File->Import ALL AT ONCE using Ctrl+ to select files.
Specify "New or Recovered" account when asked.
Of course you will use a different filename for the new file, and
you will have both versions to choose from when done. I would also
set up the backups to make sure they are using different names.

Thank you for making this much clearer. Will have a go and see what
comes out!

If I have a 2005 UK file, can I use it backwards with 2004 UK copy?

Hi James,
Every few months I check MS Money UK thread to see if there is any news on
potential updates to MS Money UK beyond 2005. And each time I am disappointed
with the lack of investment in the uk version of Money. Today I read your
response from 31/10 and am very encouraged with your progress.
Like you, I've been using Money UK since 2000, currently on MM04UK under
Vista. Like you I reconcile my accounts manually and do not download online
bank statements. Like you I make heavy use of portfolio manager (uk/us
equities, uk funds - simple stuff nothing too complicated). I also make use
of Cash Flows, Budgets and to some extent lifetime planner. Receiving prices
from uk/us equity and uk funds is essential for me. My MM04UK file size is
currently at 22M and is very stable, but growing fast.
You're very wise to have MM04UK and MM08US running in parallel for such a
critical application until you have reached the required level of confidence
in MM08US. I have to say I was put off by the statement I noticed today in
the FAQ section of the Free Trial of MM08+
(http://www.microsoft.com/money/freetrial_deluxe.mspx#1 ) which states in
italics under the question "I am currently using previous version of Money,
Can I install the trial?":
"INTERNATIONAL USERS: Please note that data files created or upgraded with
this version of Money Plus are not compatible with and may not be opened by
international versions of the product."
However the need to move on from MM04UK is far too great not to attempt what
you have achieved so far. So I'll have a go of upgrading to MM08 Trial but
also run MM04UK in parallel and let you know how it goes.
regards
Manish

Hi Manish, good luck with it. One of the MVPS is kindly also going to run a
trial of this once I get a test MM04UK file over to him and I'll feel much
more comfortable when we have a few more-expert datapoints than only my
tests so far... Sadly nobody to date has reported back anything other than
MM08US being unable to open their UK format files, which is worrying as I
have only a month left om my trial version.
Anyway, to re-state the obvious particularly given your posting below,
please only use a COPY of the UK format file for this and also do not try to
run MMUK and MMUSA simultaneously (preferably install for the test on
entirely separate hardware if you are able to...)
Bonne chance!

please only use a COPY of your UK format file for this and also do not try
to
run MMUK and MMUSA simultaneously (preferably install for the test on
entirely separate hardware if you are able to...) I have tried just for my
own peace of mind
and can confirm that this is a one-way process. I have not been able -
unsurprisingly - to get
the file once converted to 08Us format back into 04UK. So PLEASE do not
anyone try the
conversion to 08US on their main working file without copious backups.
Bonne chance!

Hi James,
Thanks for the warning. I keep numerous backups of all my important data. My
backup of Money go all the way back to 2000. One thing that Money doesn't
keep track of is the changing budgets over time, hence the need for the
backups.
Anyway I'll have a go at this over the weekend, but will need 2/3 weeks
before I can fully test all the features.
But even after Glyn and I have tested sucessfully, you won't know for sure
how your MM08US will respond to future releases of MM US version. There may
be some lingering datastructre (for example) from MM04UK that causes issues
going forward. I very much hope that's not the case, but something we should
be aware of. I work in IT on banking systems and have encountered unusual
upgrade scenarios on platforms that significantly more expensive than MS
Money.
I've lost hope on any future updates of UK Money. So intend to migrate to US
version, but would want to ensure the best approach to the migration. I
understand that an alternative approach is some kind of export/import that I
read sometime ago on the MPV site. I can't remember the details, but I'm sure
it can be found. I was going to wait until Q1 2008, in the unlikely event MS
UK bought out a new release of Money UK, which they haven't and are unlikely
to.
Also, another thing we need to be aware of is the functionality that you
currently use may not be same going forward. So like you I'm not too
concercened about the tax treatment in MM08US, but I may be in the future and
if I don't test to ensure it operates as it should post upgrade, I may find
myself locked in to a platform whose feature I'm unable to fully utilise due
to lingering MM04UK 'features'. It's important to be aware of the risks for
critical application as Money is to me. But having read your threads I am
very encouraged.
I would be very interested to learn whether you have experienced any issues
on the following:
Management of transactions on accounts
Management of Projected Cashflows
Management of Bills
Management of Budgets
Update of Prices for UK/US Equities, UK Funds
Management of catagories/payees.
Reports
So I would encourage MM04UK users interested in migrating to undertake
comprehensive testing, but as James very rightly mentioned, ensure you have
plenty of backups.
Regards
Manish

Hi James
Just to update - I am on UK05 and am currently exporting / importing
QIF files to MM08US. So far so good! It is tedious but not as bad as I
expected. I am transferring one account at a time and reconciling it.
Will keep you informed.

The problem with that is that transfers are not recognized.
If you File->Import all at once, the transfers do get recognized as
such.

Carl
Unless I have missed the point completely, I am not sure about this.
So far, have imported about 60% of the accounts and have not had a
problem.

Did you have transfers in the original data? For example, when you
pay a credit card, that would classically be entered as a Transfer
(or equivalent "SPECIAL Credit Card Payment" category) from the
bank to the credit card account. If you import separately, this
would turn into a separate payment and a credit.
This is not necessarily bad thing. However if you make reports of
expenses, it will appear to double your expenses: you will show an
expense for each CC purchase, and another apparent expense for
paying your credit card bill. If you do choose to not handle credit
card payments as transfers or
the pre-defined "Credit Card Payment Instead create one category of
"CC payment" or some such. If you define the category as an
expense category, expect a warning when you use it to represent the
payment within the credit card account -- if you have the warning
enabled. Just click Yes in response to the warning. The category
should net at zero in reports across accounts, and you can still
customize to ignore the category if you like. For this method you
could use the Money "EXPENSE Credit Card Payment".
To show negative expenses in a report, when you customise, make
sure the Details tab chooses AllTypes, rather than Payments. |

No - Money is not backwards compatible. However assuming that you upgraded
from 2004 to 2005, you could use the copy of your .mny file that Money made
at the time of the upgrade BUT (and here is the big downside) you would have
to reinput all transactions you have input since that time!

Cal
I did not have an issue here as I like to look at what I am posting
and download statements before and review before posting, hence no
transfer issues.
