Anyone been successful in using a UK datafile in the new 2008 Money Plus US
version? I'd appreciate advice/comments before I commit to a permanent
change to the US version please... Here's why:-
I'm a long term user of the UK version having converted from Quicken back in
2000 or so. My data file is now over 40M and inevitably has a myriad of
active and closed accounts after being used for so long. It is pretty
heavily stressed with many investment and bank accounts, most of which are
non-UK as I do not live there. The only way in which the system has a light
loading is that I never use online banking/brokerage connection as I do all
reconciliations manually, and also I am not concerned by the differences in
tax/investment accounting treatment between the systems.
Three weeks ago I took the plunge to convert to the Trial US version of MM
Plus Deluxe. Still running the 2004 UK version in parallel. System is Vista.
Surprisingly, given the many difficulties that I've seen described over the
years in going from the UK to US version on the excellent MVPS site (for
which thank you all those involved) and here, it so far seems to be 100%
successful. I did an intensive file repair on the datafile before allowing
MM US to update it, and then ran a modified version of the
ResetLifetimePlanner patch which resolved the only apparent error when
opening the updated file (but which of course wiped out all the Lifetime
Planner data - not a big deal.) I was expecting to have to do QIF-type
exports etc, but surprisingly US 2008 seemed perfectly happy to update a
copy of the UK version file.
Had to redo some customization in the Portfolio screens but apart from that
I have not - fingers crossed - identified any problems whatsoever. Three
weeks later the old UK and the US systems remain in lockstep as far as I can
see and MM US hasn't crashed once (yet.) Too good to be true, perhaps...
So an open question to anyone who has experience of this: please share your
findings on this thread. I don't want to cut over totally to the US version
yet without the benefit of others' experiences if possible, and I've several
weeks left on the Trial version before I buy the US product.
Thanks in anticipation.

I am interested in how you managed to get the US version to accept the UK
file. Normally it gives an "incompatible version" error.

Hi Bob.
Yes, I can well understand that as it was what I expected too... Best I can
describe was that I copied the 45meg data file from the UK 2004 version that
I've relied upon up until now and then ran a file repair operation on the
copy in MM04 UK. Was just a Standard File Repair. Took the file, copied it
to my spare PC, and then after the MM08 US trial version was installed and
running nicely on its own little US default file I simply opened the copy UK
file from the file menu. As I say, MM UK and MM US were installed on
separate computers initially for this operation (but subsequently now
running on the same PC although not simultaneously) and all the datafiles
reside in the same directory (both the US default one and the UK-derived
ones.)
MM08 accepted the file and displayed a home page but not in my old layout -
looked like it was a default one. I then tried to customise that and this
caused an error message about invalid lifetime planner data (sorry - don't
have the exact message noted down.) Had to exit MM at that message - cannot
continue. Closed and reopened the file a few times and after several minutes
each time the planner error came up.
I pulled down the US Planner fix patch from your excellent MVPS site,
modified it for the new version number and it worked. It zeroed out all the
lifetime planner data out of course, but then no more error message either.
Subsequently populated the Lifetime Planner again and it works fine,
although obviously with US parameters etc.
I have since performed this with two other MM UK datafiles, although these
are both much smaller and less complex than my main file. As I said, that
has the full range of multi-currency accounts and complex investment stuff
in it, and I was amazed that it (so far) seems to work perfectly. These
other two are smaller (3Mb and 1Mb) and one was a legacy from old Quicken
converted back in 2000 whilst the other was created new around 2002 in
whatever MM UK version was then extant. The larger has multi-currency
accounts in it but the other is plain vanilla GBP only. Both seem to work
just fine after running the modified PlannerFix on each BUT neither file
actually contained any lifetime planner data. Despite that, they did both
require running the PlannerFix to preclude the error flag.
Running the PlannerPatch seemed to take out all the planner data from not
only the active datafile but others too when they were later re-opened. In
other words, the necessary sequence seems to be to convert each datafile
from UK format and run the patch after each one and ONLY then start to
repopulate the Lifetime Planners.
Seems too good to be true but after three weeks I can't isolate any errors
anywhere in the file as against the reference UK04 version still being
maintained in parallel against it. All the functionality that I've tried to
stress test seems just fine; multi-currency transactions, traded options,
new accounts not in home currency etc etc. My recorded report definitions
came over perfectly. The Portfoio Manager works fine but my customised
layouts had to be re-done as they did not (but then that seemed to be a
problem even going between UK version 04 and 05 anyway.) As I said, the one
thing I DON'T do is use the online link to our brokerages and banks - always
do that manually. But downloading of investment prices seems absolutely fine
(off topic: irritatingly, the new version still doesn't obtain Swiss-listed
equity prices online gggrrrrrr)
In short, I just haven't found any errors yet but being a worrier I'm still
unconvinced on something as critical as this data is to me. Hence my post
asking for other folks' experience as I am loath to drop my parallel running
just yet.

I use Money 2004 UK, but can't manage to get Money PLUS US to open my
file. I downloaded the US Deluxe trial and tested based upon your
results. I've set the test up upon on a separate PC to be safe. I
receive a "Money can't open this file because it was created using a
different version of Money" message every time. I've tried repairs
using the 2004 and PLUS tools as well. |

OK have just re-done this on my wife's old Sony laptop. Running XP SP2 with
slow old Pentium III and 1Gb RAM.
It worked perfectly again. This time I noted the sequence so you can try to
emulate:
- turn off AV temporarily for the install
- start Trial install. Say NO if it asks to remove the old MM version it may
find
- when installed restart AV
- say no when it asks for password on the new data file
- skip a/c setup but have it create the new file in the same directory as
your old copy of your MM UK datafile (USE A COPY!!!!)
- when new file has been built exit MM normally
- restart MM, and it will open up with its new empty file
- from the file menu do FILE > OPEN and the "About Upgrading your MM File"
page will appear
- click OK (I think it was - forgot to write that bit down: anyway, let MM
do its thing...)
- converting file flag should appear
- it will get part through it then fail with the Planner Error flag: "A
file needed to run Planner is either missing or corrupted..." etc
- click OK a few times and MM will crash out to the desktop
- make sure it is truly unloaded and that the stub is not still running
using Task Manager or whatever
- now download the ResetLifetimePlanner Fix patch for US version 2007 from
the excellent MVPS site
- [ONLY DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK AS IT MODIFIES THE REGISTRY] modify the
patch to point to the new v17 of MM as below
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Money\17.0]
"DeleteLifeTimePlan"=dword:00000001
- merge the patch into the Registry and again DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK
- restart MM which will open its clean new empty MM08 datafile (not your
ex-UK one) because it crashed last time so didn't save the parameter
- open your UK version datafile by FILE > OPEN using the exact same one you
used a few steps ago
- it will likely give you the Planner Error again but this time when you
click OK the program will not crash (well, mine didn't!)
- now close MM and don't take backups etc
- re-run the modified ResetLifetimePlanner fix one more time by right-click
merge on it
- now finally start MM again and your file will be the default one loaded,
will be converted to USA format, and will be stable (I hope...mine seems to
be every time I did the above)
Which is where this thread started - I won't feel comfortable switching to
the US version until this has been given a good testing by others more
knowledgeable than me with MM, so all feedback gratefully appreciated.

Actually I wonder if it works for you because you came from Quicken a long

Don't think so: as I mentioned lower down the thread, two of the files did
indeed come from Quicken originally then converted into MMUK, but the third
one (the smallest as it happens) was originated in MMUK04. It converted
equally well, but I have to say it has very little data in it and perhaps
that's not a fair test.
Bob, did you have any luck trying this using the more detailed notes I
posted? Same problem? Could you explain more exactly at what point in the
process it blows out when you try it?
Many thanks,
James

James, I take my hat off to you. We seem to have similar requirements and my
file of 23mb is also really slow. The million $ question though is: Is Money
Plus faster? Does it update all tranactions, Bills etc immediately or does it
still take a few minutes? If this is the case, I might take the plunge myself.
I also don't use online banking as I don't live in the UK, but have been
using the UK versions ever since 2002. I'm now on 2005.
So the question is are you happy with the conversion? Is it worth the hassle?
Thanks,
Simon

So far (over three weeks) it seems to work really well. No crashes (fingers
crossed) and it appears slick, certainly as fast as 04UK which opens my
45Meg datafile in a couple of seconds on my main PC. Thus far I've kept both
systems updated in parallel and I haven't yet found any mis-matches or data
errors whatsoever between the two - but I'm nervous having previously seen
many health warnings by the MVPS and other knowledgeable MM folks about the
feasibility of conversion with earlier versions. Hence my request to have
others try this too with the US Trial before I buy the US version and cut
over totally.
Entering a transaction is as instant as it is on MMUK04. And it does have a
far better Portfolio Manager if you want anything other than bog-standard
equities handling, including sensible treatment of traded options, and
automatic dividend alerts/entry. Reporting is somewhat better too in my
view. The prog also has an excellent new feature which lets you link to
external files such as PDFs of statements, Excel reconciliations etc etc
from within the registers.
Downsides? It is (obviously) written in US-ese and if you are irritated by
descriptions of "checks" and suchlike then don't bother... More seriously
for some the accounting/tax rules obviously follow US practice but you can
adapt share matching etc to be FIFO or pooled. As is the case with MM UK05
compared with 04UK, the product is much more webified and does tend to
include a lot more advise-like content (or simply sales-like if you want to
be cynical) which hops you out of the program proper out on to the Web. 04UK
is notably more pure in that sense. I don't mind it too much now because
I've learned in the last three weeks what NOT to click to avoid it but
YMMV...
The major gap in my testing has been online bank and broker linking since I
don't do it and don't intend to start now. Securities price updates etc in
the Portfolio Manager do work however and seem every bit as reliable as they
are in my 04UK version, with some added flexibility. The search facility for
securities is massively improved. FX and multicurrency works fine and in the
Portfolio is actually displayed rather better than in 04UK using relevant FX
symbols for each account..
Whilst I've seen some negative press about the lack of value in updating
from the earlier US version to MM08 I think it would be fair to say that it
overall is a far better featured and more mature product than the
badly-lagging 04 and 05 UK versions with which we have been stuck over here
in Europe.
The main issue remains however: is a converted file reliable at the 100%
confidence level needed for such a critical app? That's why I kicked off
this thread. Hopefully others can get a copy of their UK-version file over
into 08US and then give it a try - I for one would be very grateful...

Janes Hi,
Thanks for the the info (intel'), you have given me the confidence to take
the plunge.
I just tried, going through each step as you said, but my file didn't crash
at the conversion stage, I just got the message that the file was created
using a different version. Did I miss something?

Sounds as if it worked OK, but possibly the message (which I never got on
any of the conversions) might perhaps be because you have an 04UK format
datafile? Mine are 04UK. I don't have 05UK so I can't try it out.
But can you open the converted file in the MM US version OK? If so then try
using it and see if it remains stable. Also, if you had Lifetime PLanner
data in it, did it covert or does it crash when you try using the Lifetime
Planner?

My files are in 05UK format. So I gues I'm out of luck there. Shame 'cause
the MM2005 program is so damn slow sometimes. I skipped 2004 and went from
2002 straight to 2005. Do you thingk that if I downloaded a trial version of
MM04UK and first converted my files back to 2004 and then tried going to
2008US that might work?
Thanks anyway.

The official way to move from UK to US versions would be QIF
export/import. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/178830
This could also be a way to stay with the same version, but to
really clean up the file. Many things do not convert, but it might
be a way to fix a bad slow file.
You would create a new file with a different name to do the
importing, so if you don't like the result, you could go back to the
file you use now. |

Thanks Carl for that little gem of information, but I think I will forgo the
pleasure of that task and stay with my old and slow 2005. Perhaps Microsoft
will get their fingers out and bring out either a full blown UK version or an
international one. Why don't Microsoft UK do something?

Simply because not enough people have been buying UK Money to make the
sizeable spend needed to make a US version into a UK version a profitable
exercise.
