After upgrading to Vista and installing Money 2001 I am unable to update
prices anylonger. I get the following error:

Money was unable to complete the operation. There is a problem with your
Money installation. Please reinstall Money from your original product disks.

I have tried various suggestions such as resintalling, adding Money to the
Firewall etc.

Towards the top righthand corner there is a button 'MSN' which shows a
dropdown list of options. MSN Home brings up uk.MSN home page correctly but
MSN Moneycentral brings up the Live Search page.

I have been using Money 2001 for years and am very happy with it. I would
not like to have to upgrade at the moment.

Rob.

Have you followed the various tips such as NOT having your .mny and .mbf
files in Program Files and running money.exe first time by right clicking
and choosing Run as administrator?

My .mny and .mbf are not in Pogram Files. I did not try your suggestion to
run as admin. Do I need to completely uninstall/reinstall again?

I am trying to completely uninstall MS Money but I can still see references
to it in the registry. Is there a clean way of clearing these? I have tried
WindowsInstallerCleanup but that did not show MS Money in the list of
applications to remove.

When I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling before, I find that MS Money
when started opens the previous money file. I don't want MS Money to remember
any settings from the previous install. How do I get rid of them?

Best way is to navigate to where your .mny file is and double click on the
file name. That will start Money and it will use that location until you
tell it otherwise.

BTW you didn't need to uninstall Money just right click the executable.

Problem with Vista is that it is very picky about where you keep your data
files. If you haven't got a location that it approves of, it will open the
file for you but will not write a copy back!

I tried just right clicking and running as administrator but it had no
effect. So I have tried fully uninstalling it again but I am still up against
the registry entries which seem to still exist.

I think I will do a complete reinstall of Vista and only try installing
Money. Should it be installed while Logged in as Admin or installed logged in
as the normal user?

Right-click the Setup.exe on the CD and choose RunAsAdministrator.
Then later run the program once by right-clicking the Money start
icon and choose RunAsAdministrator.

It is possible you will need to set up a compatibility mode for
Money.

Hi Robert,

Can I just be sure that your Money 2001 did open under Vista - at least
once- and the error message was associated with the first attempt to
download & update share prices?

As far as I know there is not a clean and easy way to uninstall Money (and
many other programs). As you see, stuff is left behind in the registry and
it is this stuff that is found - not overwritten - and used after you
reinstall. Before programs insisted on 'phoning home', leaving a file
in-place that effectively identified 'date of first installation' enabled
the maker to disable the program after one year (anti virus subscriptions)
or after two years (Money 2005 Online Services) etc. If you are prepared to
reformat your hard-drive and reload everything that's different - but I
would not say it is easy - and you might well have problems getting
Microsoft to accept the reloaded OS was genuine.

If you can positively identify files that 'should' have been deleted during
an uninstall then, as far as I know, you can safely delete them manually.
The problem, however, are those files that are put in directories like
C:\Windows\System32 amongst hundreds of others - there is big risk if you
delete a file that is vitally important.

I'm sure you do right to stick with Money 2001 (and I'm not sure that
upgrading would actually cure the difficulty you have - which like as not is
with Vista rather than Money).

Thanks teabag.

Yes the program runs fine in all other respects. I was happy using it for a
number of days before I tried to do an online update.

I don't think there will be a problem we reinstalling Vista as I have
already performed this three times to get to where I am right now. Do other
people have as much trouble as I seem to do? I have successfully done a
complete restore twice and a system rollback which failed completely leaving
me with a completely empty Control Panel.

Quote simply may no longer work with 2001, since it is no longer supported
by Microsoft.
But, you may want to verify that it is using the correct "quoteserver"
address.

Robert,

I use Money 2000 and, in this area, your 2001 may be different.

Go Tools/ Options/ Connection and see what is ticked and what is not.

I clear the tick against "Financial news ..... & more" - and consequently
get an error message after (I have manually initiated) "Update Internet
Information" on the Home Page. It reads: "Server could not process ...
(SMC404)"; I expect something like this.

Obviously I do have a tick against "Share quotes ......etc" - and most of
the time the message reads: "Call completed successfully". However, when an
ISIN symbol is regarded as wrong (probably because things were changed at
the server end) this will change to a report saying "Your symbol is wrong -
or words to that effect". Sometimes issues like this clear by themselves
(because the server is corrected).

The symbols for some of the "Indices" (Dow, FTSE etc) and the URLs for some
of the Stock Exchanges (Tokyo, Joburg) are hardcoded in Money2000 and what
is there is now obsolete - so these don't work and we can't change them. Of
course you can manually create "Watch Accounts" with the current symbols for
such Indices.

Bob, I have reinstalled Vista and then took a complete backup. I noticed that
it removed my previous complete backup which I was hoping to use. So all was
lost. I never asked for that.

Anyway, I then installed Money first as Admin but users could not run it,
then installed as user but it asked for Admin and still only Admin can run
it. Also when updating prices it does update the prices now but it still
reports this error:

An error was encountered while processing a downloaded file ('QFE9813.CAB')
during SmartConnect.

How do I allow non Admin users to use Money?

Rob.

Do as both Cal and I have advised. Navigate with My Computer/Windows
Explorer to the folder that money.exe is installed in, right click and
select Run as Administrator. Thereafter non-Admin users can run from a
desktop icon.

Thanks Bob.

I tried installing as Admin and right clicking run as admin but I just could
not run it from another user. BTW did you install in Microsoft's program
directories or in your own created directory. I have found more success with
running older software if I install in my own directory.

Anyway I have resorted to always using the Admin account and it mostly works
OK.
